20 years ago this week, one of daytime's most popular, controversial and groundbreaking storyIines climaxed on General Hospital - the saga of the Ice Princess. Under the direction of then-executive producer Gloria Monty, the Ice Princess took daytime drama into the realm of science fiction. Megalomaniacs, international spies, rich powerful moguls, an ocean voyage to a tropical island, a mad scientist and an insidious weather machine were all set against the backdrop of high-stakes drama and the romance of the ultimate daytime supercouple. Luke and Laura. The story that pitted Luke, Laura and WSB agent Robert Scorpio against the Cassadines achieved national attention when its two lead players, Anthony Geary (Luke) and Genie Francis (Laura), landed on the cover of Newsweek magazine. The Ice Princess, itself, was said to be the world's largest uncut diamond. It was painted black and mounted on a base, inside of which was the secret formula for the creation of synthetic diamonds - the powder of which could be used to create carbonic snow. With the Ice Princess in his possession. Mikkos Cassadine (played by the late John Colicos) wished to harness its power to control the weather - and the world. It was up to Luke to save the day when he, Laura and Robert stowed away on the Cassadinc yacht that was headed to the Cassadines' secret island compound, where the evil clan had constructed their weather machine. Just minutes before Port Charles would become a permanent popsicle, Luke figured out Mikkos code to stop the machine: Ice Princess. Now, some two decades later, the saga of the Ice Princess has been taken out of the deep freeze. Since GH's current regime has thawed out that mystical symbol of power, newer viewers may now appreciate why the original story was such a hit. Reflecting on the storyline and still unmatched popularity, Geary once said, "it had its tongue in its cheek and it let the audience in on the joke. It had a whole style of its own." The story melded sci-fi and fantasy with the traditional soap fare of heartbreak love and tragedy. Yet for all its outrageousness. Geary said "Yes, it was so far out there - but guess what? It had humomgous ratings, and the audience at that time was loving it." The task of reviving the Ice Princess for the GH of the 21st century has fallen into the hands of executive producer Jill Farren Phelps and head writer Megan McTavish - who, while new to the show, is keenly aware of the original story's impact and intent. "Over the years, this piece of rock has certainly been a raison d'eter for many things." McTavish points out. "This is the new and biggest and, in some ways, final chapter of this long, historical war between these two families: the Spencers and the Cassadines." Mikkos perpetually vengeful widow, Helena, is now using the Ice Princess as a hypnotic tool to brainvyash Luke and Laura's son, Lucky. Says Mctravish. "Since the day it was painted black and had the secret formula in it, it has been the symbol of 'the fight.' When Luke had it. Helena wanted it back, and when Helena has it. Luke wants it back. It's very appropriate that Helena chose that as the means to trigger Lucky". McTavish points out that it "isn t really about a diamond" but that it represents the "heart" of the story. "It's about love, hate, war and obsession. The Ice Princess is an interesting symbol of all that -whoever holds the Ice Princess holds the power. That's why she uses it as the trigger. It tickles her funny bone that the thing Luke wants so badly is the thing she's using to bring about his son's destruction and his own destruction. Helena loves irony." McTavish adds with a chuckle. "With enough money, Helena Cassadine can do anything." McTavish reasons about the return of her formerly deceased son, Stavros Cassadine. "Given the technology, people are really doing this - storing people. No one has ever woken up yet, but I think that's where you go back to the roots of the great beginnings of this story under Gloria Monty." McTavish subscribes to Monty' s method of using "a premise that is unbelievable in real life (freezing the world) to intensify the drama. "Part of the wonderfulness of daytime is the fantasy element, and the fact that this is life -and-death stakes for the world really helps heighten the romance of the situation! Although audiences have since come to expect bit more reality from GH, McTavish believes the show can still succeed in returning to the cloak-and-dagger theme that made it a pop-cultural icon in the early '80s. The wonderful thing is that GH has always been able to go bigger than life and take their audience with them." McTavish says. "Our job is simply to produce a story in that grand tradition with our contemporary cast". WHO ARE WHO - AND WHERE ARE THEY NOW BILLY HAYES (Agent O'Reilly) O'Reilly was Robert Scorpio's feisty and spunky WSB partner. Victor Cassadine shot her to death in a Port Charles phone booth. "Scorpio and O'Reilly were a wonderful team," Hayes says. "They truly loved each other, which made it all the more poignant when O'Reilly died. Tristan (Rogers, Robert) is a thrilling actor, and I adore him. Defining Tony Geary (Luke) I like trying to define the universe; he is unique and extremely gifted." Hayes is currently busy doing voice-over work. "While I love the work, of course, I miss performing in front of a live audience". SHARON WYATT (Tiffany Hill Donely) A former B-movie actress, Tiffany arrived aboard the Cassadine yacht on the arm of Victor Cassadine, but when she learned of his family's plot to rule the world, she befriended Robert Scorpio and helped him stop their reign of terror. "It was great getting to wear Bob Mackie dresses every day, and drinking champagne from a flowing fountain. It was just a wild time that will never be matched", Wyatt says. Wyatt remained with GH on and off until 1994. She enjoyed the "unpredictability" of her flamboyant character especially the comedic aspects. "Tiffany reminded me of Lucille Ball a lot, and all that kookiness", she once said "She was able to do anything she wanted to and still come out smelling like a rose. It was great fun to play". Since leaving GH, Wyatt has made several appearances on episodic TV, and has also returned to the stage in her native Tennessee. MERRIE LYNN ROSS (Emma Lute) Emma innocently gained possession of the Ice Princess and, not realizing its value, donated the statuette to a charity auction in hopes of entering Port Charles' high society. "When they established the storyline, the Ice Princess was already in Emma's apartment," Ross notes. "Her husband, Charlie, was a fence, and he brought it home to her as a gift. She used to talk to it. The character would polish it and say, "You're the cutest thing I've ever seen!" "GH was my retirement program," Roes says with a laugh. "I got pregnant and decided I wanted to be home with my kid, so I wrote scripts and produced projects from home without having to be on a set." Ross created and runs the non-profit organization The Merrieway CommUnity for better education, and is also writing her autobiography. THAAO PENGHLLS (Victor Cassadine) The youngest of the Cassadine brothers, Victor was the only one to survive their ordeal on the Island, and was later carted off to prison. Because Tony Cassadine (the first Cassadine brother to appear in Port Charles) wasn't that powerful, they wanted to bring on another Cassadine who was stronger," explains Penghlis. "That became the formation and characteristics of the three brothers: You had John Colicos (Mikkos) as the powerful one, and then the more ruthless one, which was myself. Even though they saved me for the purpose of bringing me back, I went with (then-GH head writer Pat) Falken Smith to Days of Our Lives (where he played Tony and Andre DiMera) Instead." Penghlls, along with his partner Sherry Thomas, now runs his own production company. "We have three projects: One is being developed into a series in Australia; we have a thriller called Fake; and then we have a huge epic being developed with a major studio." ANDRE LANDZAAT (Tony Cassadine) Tony came to Port Charles under the pseudonym of wealthy businessman Tony Castle. He briefly dated Lesley Webber while trying to recover the stolen Ice Princess. "Since Tony was frozen to death, this could be the perfect time to bring back the original Cassadine, through cryogenics," Landzaat suggests. After GH, Landzaat returned to his native Holland for personal reasons. He later appeared in one of The Netherlands' most popular series, Westenwind , "which is still airing." Landzaat also belongs to the Actor's Studio, and recently worked with Maximilian Schell on a documentary of Judgment at Nuremberg. RENEE ANDERSON (Alexandria Quartermaine) Alexandria was Edward Quartermaine's shrewd niece. She hoped to amass a fortune by producing and distributing synthetic diamonds using the Ice Princess. Their dream never came to fruition, since Alex was frozen to death in Mikkos' Ice chamber. "it was inevitable that Alexandria would have to die, but it was a great scene in a great storyline, and a great death. They can unfreeze me anytime." After leaving GH, Anderson turned her attentions to the production side of the Industry. She was recently featured in the book Backstage at the Dean Martin Show, written by the show's musical director, Lee Hale. THE ICE PRINCESS STORY Aristocratic, avaricious Alexandria Quartermaine hired devilmay-care adventurer Luke Spencer to find the ice Princess (a huge, uncut diamond painted black that contained a secret formula in its base). The Ice Princess had disappeared somewhere en route to Port Charles. Dashing WSB agent Robert Scorpio and Tony Cassadine were both determined to find it. Luke had no idea what he was looking for or why it was so important. (Alex had intentionally omitted these key details.) Somehow, the ugly statue came into the possession of clueless Lila Quartermaine, who promptly donated it to a charity an auction. Luke vowed to swipe it. Tensions ran high at the auction. Right before bidding began, the lights went out. When power was restored, Luke - and the Ice Princess - were missing ... but they weren't together. Surprise - Alex and Tony filched it. The ex-lovers rekindled their passion, and over pillow talk, Alex revealed that she and scientist James Duvall had created a formula for manufacturing synthetic diamonds; it was in the base of the I.P. Duvall went nuts upon discovering that the formula was missing. He attacked Alex, who (rather fittingly) whacked him over the head with the hunk of Ice and killed him. Later, she found the formula and boarded the Cassadine yacht. Bad move. Scorpio, Luke and his fiancee, Laura, hid aboard the yacht, which sailed to the Cassadine island. The stowaways camped in the jungle. The official guests settled in an underground compound. where deranged megalomaniac Mikkos Cassadine announced he could freeze the world with a weather machine capable of producing carbonic snow. His test city: Port Charles. While P.C. residents battled a September blizzard, Scorpio, Luke and Laura (with help from B-movie actress Tiffany Hill) invaded the Cassadine fortress. During Mikkos and Luke's violent struggle, Cassadine fell into the frozen chamber that had already turned Alex and Tony into permanent popsicles. In the nick of time, Luke figured out the secret code needed to shut down the weather machine's computer: Ice Princess. The world was safe.

Vent'anni fa questa settimana, una delle più popolari, controverse e pionieristiche storie del daytime raggiungeva il suo culmine in General Hospital - "La Principessa di Ghiaccio". Sotto la direzione della produttrice esecutiva Gloria Monty, la Principessa di Ghiaccio portò le soap operas nel territorio della fiction scientifica. Maniaci megalomani, spie internazionali, ricchi uomini d'affari, un viaggio sull'oceano verso un'isola tropicale, uno scienziato pazzo ed un'insidiosa macchina del tempo sono gli elementi che fanno da sfondo alla storia d'amore della più popolare supercoppia del daytime, Luke e Laura. La storia che contrappose Luke, Laura e, l'agente dell'Ufficio per la Sicurezza degli Stati Uniti, Robert Scorpio contro i Cassadine attirò l'attenzione nazionale e portò i suoi due interpreti principali Anthony Geary (Luke) e Genie Francis (Laura) sulla copertina del settimanale Newsweek.

La Principessa di Ghiaccio fu definita come il più grande diamante grezzo esistente al mondo. Era dipinta di nero e montata su una base dentro la quale era nascosta la formula segreta per la fabbricazione di diamanti sintetici, la cui la polvere avrebbe potuto essere usata per creare neve artificiale. Dopo aver ottenuto il possesso della Principessa di Ghiaccio, Mikkos Cassadine (interpretato da John Colicos) progettava di sfruttarne il potere per controllare il tempo e il mondo.

Spettò a Luke il compito di salvare il mondo: Luke, Laura e Robert s'imbarcarono clandestinamente sullo yacht dei Cassadine diretto verso la loro residenza sotterranea su un'isola tropicale dove la diabolica famiglia aveva costruito la macchina per controllare il clima. Pochi minuti prima che Port Charles venisse trasformata in un eterno ghiacciolo, Luke intuì quale fosse il codice segreto per bloccare la macchina: Principessa di Ghiaccio.

Adesso, quasi vent'anno dopo, la saga della Principessa di Ghiaccio è stata scongelata. Dal momento che i produttori di GH hanno riportato alla luce questo mistico simbolo di potere, il pubblico più giovane potrà capire perché la storia originale fu un così enorme successo. Riflettendo sulla storia e sulla sorprendente popolarità A. Geary una volta ha detto: "Era una storia bizzarra e il pubblico è stato allo scherzo. Aveva uno stile tutto suo". La vicenda mescolava i generi science-fiction e fantastico con i tradizionali elementi delle soap, amore, tragedia e dramma, riuscendo comunque a mantenere la sua originale eccentricità. Afferma Geary: "Certo era improbabile - ma sapete una cosa? Ha avuto sorprendenti ascolti e il pubblico all'epoca ha dimostrato di amarla"

Il compito di far rivivere la Principessa di ghiaccio per GH nel 21° secolo spetta alla produttrice esecutiva Jill Farren Phelps ed alla capo sceneggiatrice Megan McTavish che è consapevole dell'impatto della storia originale. "Nonostante gli anni questo pezzo di roccia ha certamente più di una ragione per esistere" puntualizza McTavish. "Questo è il nuovo ed, in qualche modo, il capitolo finale di questa lunga e storica guerra fra queste due famiglie: gli Spencers e i Cassadine".

La vendicativa vedova di Mikkos Cassadine, Helena, sta ora usando la Principessa di Ghiaccio come uno strumento ipnotico per controllare la mente di Lucky, il primogenito di Luke e Laura. Afferma McTavish: "Dal giorno in cui è stata dipinta di nero e nella sua base è stata nascosta la formula segreta, La Principessa di Ghiaccio ha sempre rappresentato un simbolo di 'lotta'. Quando Luke l'aveva, Helena la rivoleva indietro e ora che Helena la possiede, Luke la reclama. E' l'oggetto più appropriato che Helena poteva scegliere per soggiogare Lucky".

McTavish puntualizza che "non si tratta solo di un diamante", ma che rappresenta "il cuore" della storia. "E' amore, odio, guerra ed ossessione. La Principessa di Ghiaccio è un interessante simbolo di tutto questo - chiunque la possiede detiene il potere. Questo è il motivo per cui Helena la usa per controllare la mente di Lucky. La diverte enormemente il fatto che la cosa che Luke vuole così fortemente, è la stessa cosa che lei usa per distruggere lui e suo figlio. Helena ama l'ironia", aggiunge Megan McTavish.

"Con molti soldi, Helena Cassadine può fare di tutto". McTavish fa riferimento al ritorno di Stavros Cassadine, il figlio di Helena da tutti creduto morto. "Data l'attuale tecnologia, la gente può veramente congelare le persone. Ancora nessuno è mai resuscitato. Nessuno è stato ancora scongelato, ma credo che se questo accadesse ci riporterebbe alle origini di questa grande storia ideata da Gloria Monty". McTavish condivide il metodo usato dalla Monty di ricorrere ad una premessa inconcepibile nella vita reale (congelare il mondo) per intensificare la storia.

Nonostante il pubblico si aspetta un po' più di realismo seguendo GH, McTavish crede che "la soap possa ancora ritornare allo stile avventuroso che l'aveva resa un'icona pop-culturale nei primi anni ottanta. La cosa sorprendente è che GH è sempre stato capace di raccontare vicende inverosimili riuscendo comunque a conquistare il pubblico. Il nostro lavoro è semplicemente di produrre una storia in linea con la sua celebre tradizione utilizzando il cast attuale".

Interpreti e personaggi de "La Principessa di Ghiaccio"

Billy Hayes (Agente O'Reilly)
O'Reilly era la partner coraggiosa e sempre di cattivo umore di Robert Scorpio quando lavorava all'Ufficio per la Sicurezza degli Stati Uniti. Morì uccisa da un colpo di pistola sparatole da Victor Cassadine all'interno di una cabina telefonica a Port Charles. "Scorpio e O'Reilly formavano una squadra meravigliosa" afferma la Hayes. "Si volevano veramente bene e questo ha reso ancora più drammatica la sua morte". Tristan (Rogers, Robert) è un attore fantastico e lo adoro. Definire Tony Geary (Luke) è come definire l'universo; è unico e di gran talento".
Hayes lavora attualmente come doppiatrice. "Adoro questo lavoro, ma certamente mi manca recitare di fronte ad un pubblico".


Sharon Wyatt (Tiffany Hill Donely)
Ex attrice di film di serie B, Tiffany arriva a bordo dello yacht dei Cassadine al fianco di Victor Cassadine, ma quando apprende del progetto della sua famiglia di dominare il mondo fa amicizia con Robert Scorpio e lo aiuta a fermare il regno del terrore dei cassadinee. "Era molto bello indossare ogni giorno abiti di Bob Mackie e bere champagne sgorgante da una fontana. E' stato un periodo pazzesco e inimitabile" dice la Wyatt.
La Wyatt è rimasta nel cast di GH sino al 1994. Si è divertita ad interpretare la non prevedibilità del suo fiammeggiante personaggio, in particolare i suoi aspetti comici. "Tiffany ricordava molto Lucille Ball e tutta la sua stranezza. Era capace di fare tutto ciò che desiderava e farla sempre franca". Dopo aver lasciato GH, ha recitato sporadicamente in TV e poi è ritornata al teatro nella sua città natale in Tennessee.


Merrie Lynn Ross (Emma Lute)
Emma innocentemente entra in possesso della Principessa di Ghiaccio e, non intuendo il suo valore, la dona ad un'asta di beneficenza con la speranza di entrare poi nell'alta società di Port Charles. "Quando fu decisa la storia, la Principessa di Ghiaccio si trovava già nell' appartamento di Emma" sottolinea la Ross. "Suo marito Charlie era un ricettatore e la portò a casa come un regalo. Lei ci parlava con la statua. Le diceva 'Sei la cosa più bella che abbia mai visto!'".
"GH è stato il mio ultimo programma" dice ridendo. "Restai incinta e decisi di stare a casa con mio figlio, così ho scritto delle sceneggiature e prodotto progetti da casa senza mai andare su di un set". Ross ha creato e collabora all'organizzazione non-profit "The Merrieway Community" per migliorare l'istruzione e sta anche scrivendo la sua autobiografia.


Thaoo Penghlls (Victor Cassadine)
Il più giovane dei fratelli Cassadine, Victor è stato l'unico a sopravvivere al loro piano criminale sull'isola e a finire poi in prigione. "Poiché Tony Cassadine (il primo fratello Cassadine apparso a Port Charles) non era molto potente, è stato introdotto un altro fratello più forte" spiega Penghlls. "Così erano tre fratelli: John Colicos (Mikkos) era il più potente e anche il più crudele e poi c'ero io. Gli sceneggiatori mi salvarono con lo scopo di riportarmi nella storia, ma io invece seguii il capo sceneggiatore di GH Pat Falken Smith a Il tempo della nostra vita (dove ha interpretato Tony e Andre DiMera).
Penghlis, con la sua compagna Sherry Thomas, adesso dirige una sua società di produzione. "Abbiamo tre progetti: il primo è di sviluppare una serie in Australia; abbiamo un thriller intitolato Fake; e poi abbiamo da sviluppare un dramma epico con una grande casa di produzione". Nel luglio del 2002 Penghlls è tornato ad interpretare Tony DiMera.


Andre Landzaat (Tony Cassadine)
Tony arrivò a Port Charles facendosi passare per un ricco uomo d'affari, Tony Castle. Organizzò un appuntamento con Lesile Webber allo lo scopo di recuperare la Principessa di Ghiaccio. "L'aver fatto morire Tony congelandolo, è un ottimo pretesto per poterlo far tornare in vita attraverso la criogenia" suggerisce Landzaat.
Dopo GH, Landzaat è ritornato nella natia Olanda per ragioni personali. E' poi apparso in una delle serie più famose olandesi Westenwind che è ancora in onda. Ha poi raggiunto l'Actor's Studio e recentemente ha lavorato con Maximilian Schell in un documentario su Processo di Norimeberga.


Renée Anderson (Alexandria Quartermaine)
Alexandria era la scaltra nipote di Edward Quartermaine. Sperava di accumulare una fortuna producendo e distribuendo diamanti sintetici utilizzando la Principessa di Ghiaccio. Il loro sogno non si realizzò e Alex morì congelata all'interno della camera frigorifera di Mikkos. "Era inevitabile che Alexandria morisse, è stata comunque una grande scena in una grande storia ed una grande morte. Gli sceneggiatori mi possono scongelare in qualsiasi momento".
Dopo aver lasciato GH, Anderson ha rivolto la sua attenzione al dietro le quinte dell' industria cinematografica. Recentemente è stata protagonista di Backstage at the Dean Martin Show, scritto dal direttore d'orchestra Lee Hale.



La storia de "La Principessa di Ghiaccio"

L'aristocratica, l'avara Alexandria Quartermaine assume lo strafottente avventuriero Luke Spencer per trovare la Principessa di Ghiaccio (un enorme, orribile diamante dipinto di nero che contiene nella sua base una formula segreta). La statua è scomparsa durante il suo trasporto a Port Charles. L'affascinante agente dell'Ufficio per la Sicurezza degli Stati Uniti Robert Scorpio e Tony Cassadine sono entrambi determinati a recuperarla. Luke non ha nessuna idea di cosa stia cercando o il perché sia così importante. (Alex intenzionalmente ha omesso questi importanti dettagli). In qualche modo, l'orribile statua entra in possesso dell'ignara Lila Quartermaine che prontamente la dona ad un'asta di beneficenza. Luke promette di rubarla.

La tensione sale durante l'asta. Poco prima che le offerte inizino, le luci si spengono all'improvviso. Quando l'elettricità ritorna, Luke e la Principessa di Ghiaccio sono scomparsi, ma in realtà non stanno insieme.
Sorpresa! Alex e Tony l'hanno rubata. I due ex amanti riaccendono la loro passione e durante un momento d'intimità Alex rivela che lei e lo scienziato James Duvall hanno creato una formula per fabbricare diamanti sintetici e che la formula si trova alla base della Principessa di Ghiaccio. Duvall si mette alla sua ricerca dopo aver scoperto che la formula è scomparsa. Attacca Alex che, convenientemente, lo colpisce sulla testa proprio con la statua uccidendolo. Poi, trova la formula e s'imbarca sullo yacht dei Cassadine. Pessima mossa. Scorpio, Luke e la sua fidanzata Laura si nascondono a bordo dello yacht che salpa verso l'isola dei Cassadine.

I clandestini campeggiano poi nella foresta. Gli ospiti della famiglia risiedono invece in una residenza sotterranea dove il pazzo e megalomane Mikkos Cassadine annuncia che può congelare il mondo con una macchina del tempo capace di produrre neve artificiale. La città su cui vuole testarla è Port Charles. Mentre gli abitanti della città combattono contro un settembre bizzarro, Scorpio, Luke e Laura, aiutati dall'attrice di film di serie B Tiffany Hill, invadono la fortezza dei Cassadine. Durante una violenta lotta tra Mikkos e Luke, Cassadine cade nella camera frigorifera che precedentemente aveva trasformato in ghiaccioli perenni sia Alex che Tony. Nel momento più critico Luke intuisce quale sia il codice segreto per bloccare la macchina del tempo: la Principessa di Ghiaccio. Il mondo è salvo!
