What if your doorbell rang, and
answering it, you looked out to see Kin Shriner standing there. Would you
let him in?
If you're like most women, your answer would be
yes, because there are few female General Hospital fans who
could resist blond, boyishly good-looking Kin Shriner on the screen, never
mind in the flesh. And, not too many years ago, if you lived in the Los
Angeles area, it's quite possible that Kin might have rung your doorbell,
since at that time he was supporting himself as a door to-door salesman
(also busboy, dish washer and construction worker) while studying acting.
Strangely enough, Kin's lucky break came in the shape of a doorbell
ringer. That's right! His first TV soap part consisted of ringing someone's
bell on The Young and The Restless and handing them flowers.
Kin's looks were such that his agent encouraged him to try out for
daytime soap roles. And Kin, despite his ambition, was skeptical: "I
couldn't fathom the idea of doing a soap opera," he says now.
"Learning thirty pages all the way through! I didn't think I could ever
do it."
Yet, after reading for the role of Scotty on GH,
Kin was on top of the world. "I knew I had it," he recalls. "I
told my agent, `I've got the part!' Half an hour later my agent phoned and
said, `You're right!' "
Since then Kin has changed his negative
attitude toward soaps, although he was right in thinking it was not an easy
job: "You're on three or four days a week and spend the rest of the time
studying," he sighs.
For that reason, Kin maintains he does not
have the time and energy to invest in a love relationship. Instead, his
social life usually consists in palling around with female soap stars such
as Caryn Richman (Texas) and Jackie Zeman (Bobbie Spencer).
Kin expresses his newfound financial security by investing in cars
(he now owns three-a Corvette, an Oldsmobile, and a Porsche) and by eating
all his meals in restaurants.
He has also invested in a three
bedroom house in the Hollywood Hills, so if Kin comes knocking on your door
these days, it has to mean you've got a date with him!
